“Put more pressure on your ministers to end ASUU strike,” Orji Kalu told Buhari

Nigeria's Senate Chief Whip, Orji Kalu, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to put more pressure on his ministers to end the persistent industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) .

Mr. Kalu, in a Facebook post on Wednesday, also told ASUU members to endeavor to facilitate their negotiations with the Nigerian government so that students can resume their academic activities.

“I call on President Muhammadu Buhari to put more pressure on his ministers and bring students back to class,” he said.

The former Governor of Abia State, who now represents Abia North District in the Nigerian Senate, said many people in his constituency were out of school due to the ongoing strike in Nigeria. the ASUU.

“They attacked me and that worries me even more,” Mr. Kalu added.

He said that as a legislator he had no authority to resolve the ASUU strike.

The senator said that during his time as governor of Abia State, he never authorized schools in the state to close because of a strike.

He said negotiation is key to resolving industrial action if both parties are determined to do so.

The ongoing ASUU strike is worse than the insecurity in the country, he said.

"I believe the federal government and ASUU can end this strike today. Nothing derails a country like lack of education. It's worse than insecurity," said the legislator.

Mr Kalu's comment comes hours after workers, under the umbrella of the Nigeria Labor Congress, embarked on a two-day nationwide protest against the continued closure of public universities.

Universities have been closed for over five months due to unresolved issues of underfunding and poor social protection.

Some of ASUU's demands include release of earned allowance for university professors, release of revitalization fund for universities, renegotiation of 2009 agreement between ASUU and government and the deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution Platform for the payment of salaries and allowances of university professors.
