Elon Musk kept his promise to charge Twitter users a fee...and now he's trying to lure other customers in with a celebrity sales pitch.

Musk, who bought the social media giant for $44 billion last month, has officially launched Twitter Blue for $7.99 per month for users with verified accounts.

Twitter announced the decision on Saturday...and tried to make it appeal to the masses by referencing star power.

The statement began... "Get Twitter Blue if you sign up now. Blue tick: power to the people. Your account will receive a blue tick, as will the celebrities, businesses, and politicians you follow."

The company then mentioned plans to remove half of the ads and significantly improve the others. "Because you're supporting Twitter in the battle against bots, we'll reward you with half the ads and make them twice as relevant."

It's also committed to allowing users to post extended videos and giving them priority rankings for quality content in the form of replies, mentions, and searches.

Musk hopes that by charging the monthly user fee he can make up for the significant losses he has accrued since his massive purchase of Twitter in late October.
