Emefiele 'secretly' returns to Nigeria amid fear of arrest

Afflicted Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele reportedly returned to the country on Wednesday, amid growing rumors that he would be arrested by the Department of State Services.

Emefiele left the country several weeks ago following the investigation into several allegations against him, including corruption and terrorist financing.

Recall that the DSS had quietly requested a court order to arrest Mr. Emefiele, but the Federal High Court in Abuja denied their request.

In the petition, the DSS wanted the court to order the arrest of the CBN Governor for "alleged acts of terrorist financing, fraudulent activities and economic crimes of a national security dimension ".

DSS filed the petition as FHC/ABJ/CS/2255/2022 with the court on December 7, 2022.

Mr. Emefiele was the only defendant in the lawsuit which was filed "ex parte", meaning Mr. Emefiele was not given notice of the lawsuit.

According to a source who spoke to an online news platform, Premium Times, the CBN governor has obtained permission from the chairman, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (at the retirement), for two weeks of leave that expired on Tuesday.

"His vacation ended on Tuesday, so he has to report to work on Wednesday," the source said.

Meanwhile, the online news platform further reported that Mr Emefiele plans to leave the country again very soon, fearing that the secret police may possibly arrest him in the middle of the ongoing power game within the federal government.

"He is trying to leave in the next few days under the guise of attending the annual World Economic Forum," their source said.
