England fans leave Qatar without arrest

December 16 - In a first, no doubt fueled in part by the widespread alcohol ban, no British fans were arrested at the World Cup in Qatar, according to the football police chief in the UK.

"Traditionally we have had few arrests of our fans at World Cups, but having none is not something we've seen before," Chief Constable Mark Roberts said.

"The behavior of England and Wales in Qatar was absolutely exemplary",

"Throughout the home countries' participation in the tournament, there have been no arrests or incidents to report, which is a credit to all who have traveled."

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, only three arrests were made. Wales joining England in the tournament this time doubled the number of group stage matches played by British teams, including a derby match, in which England beat Wales 3-0 .

“I would also like to commend all the British officers who have been in Qatar for the work they have done to help keep British nationals safe over the past four weeks,” Roberts said.

"It would be wrong to attribute this excellent behavior entirely to Qatar's alcohol restrictions, but I think it helped to some extent."

In contrast, there were 531 football-related incidents in the UK during the World Cup.
