'Look dad, swan in front! goes the excited scream of my daughter pointing from the front of the boat as we glide along the canal at dusk with the early evening sun disappearing behind the trees.

Only hours into our five day adventure along the Shropshire Union Canal and she's already come close to horses, a field of sheep, cows and a dragonfly on the shore.

Britain has 3,000 miles (4,828 km) of canals that meander and meander through sometimes secret landscapes.

And narrowboats allow you to explore Britain's 200-year-old canal system with a birds-eye view of the stunning countryside with open fields, woodland teeming with wildlife and the odd riverside pub or two to break up the journey.

For our adventure, we chose to explore a waterway that would have been at the heart of the UK's transport network two centuries ago, during the industrial revolution, when canals were used to transport goods across the country before they were be replaced by the rail network. Today the canals are mainly used for recreation and are maintained by the Canal & River Trust.
