Enugu motorist shot dead after running over police officer at checkpoint

Men from the Enugu State Police Command fired on a motorist, Christian Ogwuike, after he allegedly ran over a policeman at a checkpoint.

PUNCH Metro figured out that Ogwuike was with his fiancée in a Lexus SUV when the incident happened on Thursday, July 21, 2022.

At the Monkey Roundabout near the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission area office, the couple reportedly encountered police officers on the road.

A source, who claimed to have witnessed the incident, claimed that police shot at the motorist when he refused to give a bribe.

He said: “When he stopped, one of the policemen, who were then six, asked him to leave the road and get off. I don't know what happened yet, but I saw when they started screaming. I heard the guy say he won't give them 5,000 naira.

“The next thing I saw was when the cops dragged the guy out of his car and shot him at close range. They also demobilized his car and took him away."

A video of the incident, which has gone viral on social media, shows the police transporting the victim in a vehicle.

Reacting to Sunday's incident, Enugu State Police Command confirmed the shooting.

State Police Public Relations Officer Daniel Ndukwe said: "On July 21, 2022, at approximately 2 p.m., a team of police officers serving in PMF No. Enugu, while carrying out routine checks and searches at the EFCC roundabout, Independence Layout, the driver of a Lexus sedan pointed out.

"The driver, rather than stop, drove away recklessly, knocking over one of the officers and dragging him approximately four posts away, before being forced to stopped by other team members, who immediately chased him.

“In an effort to prevent the driver from further escaping, one of the officers fired a shot in the knee, which hit him (the driver) in the thigh.

"The police officer, Inspector Aneka Ndayi, who suffered serious bodily injuries, and the said driver, Ogwuike Christian, were both transferred to hospital and are responding to treatment and in a state stable."

He said State Police Commissioner CP Abubakar Lawal directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to thoroughly investigate the incident and formulate actionable conclusions.
