Jordan Pickford frustrated Liverpool with a superb goalkeeping performance in an absorbing 0-0 draw with Everton at Goodison Park.

The England number one produced a series of excellent saves, while his counterpart Alisson also had to be precise to prevent a home win in a Merseyside derby that could have been awash in goals.

Both teams rocked the net in the first half, Everton through Tom Davies before Liverpool's Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz followed suit, while Mohamed Salah was also denied by the woodwork late.

The odds were circulating in an open game, and Everton thought they had taken the lead midway through the second half when former Liverpool academy player Conor Coady touched Neal Maupay's cross, only to be disallowed when a checked VAR showed he was inches offside.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson made a smart early save to collect Anthony Gordon's bubbly strike after an Everton corner was only half cleared, and the hosts went on approached a hair's breadth from the opener when Davies hit a 12-yard shot against the left post.

Jurgen Klopp's visitors showed their threat before the break, however, when Nunez's excellent strike was reversed against the crossbar by Pickford, and from the rebound Diaz smashed a practice howitzer against the right post .

Seeking better control, Klopp withdrew youngster Fabio Carvalho and brought in experienced Roberto Firmino for the second half, with Liverpool soon asking Frank Lampard's men more questions.

Nunez saw a volley comfortably caught by Pickford, then Nathan Patterson came close for the Toffees, as Virgil van Dijk deflected his shot wide.

Amid a determined effort by the Reds to find a breakthrough, Pickford saved from Firmino twice in a row, first by deflecting a shot wide before parrying the Brazilian's header from a corner.

The goalkeeper also thwarted Fabinho from close range, before Everton debutant Maupay squandered the biggest chance of the game after a quick counterattack, firing straight at Alisson who made himself high and successfully shutdown.

Coady thought he was the hero, but closer scrutiny of his 69th-minute engagement left Everton deflated, their run without a home league win against their city rivals stretching to 12 games.

It could have been worse as Salah, silent for much of the game, nearly won in stoppage time, his shot cracking from the foot of the right post after a final intervention from the inspired Pickford.< /p>
