LP inaugurates committee to reconcile aggrieved members

The Labor Party leadership has set up an 11-man committee to appease and reconcile disgruntled party members to form a united front ahead of the 2023 election.

This was revealed in a statement released Thursday in Abuja by the Chief Spokesperson of the LP Presidential Campaign Council, Dr. Yunusa Tanko.

The development comes just a week after the party's National Working Committee passed a vote of confidence in its beleaguered national chairman, Julius Abure.

Abure has been in the eye of the storm following a N40 million fraud allegation brought against him by the sacked LP National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi.

The petition, which has been made available to The PUNCH, was drafted by its attorneys Kaiser Oghenetejire & Co.

But the national chairman was released after the NWC claimed they had investigated the alleged N40 million fraud and found him not guilty.

Speaking to media men on Thursday, Tanko said the NWC had reconsidered its earlier stance to inaugurate a disciplinary committee to look into infighting threatening to tear the party apart.

The LP campaign spokesman explained that an 11-man committee called "Labour Party Security, Peace and Conflict Resolution" was instead set up to appease disgruntled members in the ultimate goal of bringing them together at the fold of the party.

The committee will be led by Chief Friday Toyin Ibadin as LPSPC Chairman and Dr. Kenneth Diyoke as Secretary.

Other members include General Enang Essien (Ret.), AIG Charles Ugomuon (Ret.), AIG Ezekiel Zang (Ret.), ACG Akubiron Chika, ACG Ali Wakili, Obol Okomiso, Samuel Emma , SP Ego Eseimo and Mrs. Comfort Okorokwo.

The statement read in part: "You are fully aware of recent media reports regarding the issues that led to the succession of our youth leader, the alleged sacking of the organization campaign of Dr. Doyin Okupe DG and our former Acting Publicity Secretary Mr. Abayomi Arabambi from office and the subsequent suspension of Ogun State party leaders.

"You will also recall that the National Executive Committee, in a statement issued after its meeting to announce the above actions, promised to set up a Disciplinary Committee to investigate the activities of the exco of Ogun State and recommend to the NWC further appropriate disciplinary action to be taken against the leaders of the Labor Party in Ogun.

"However, the NWC rather than set up a disciplinary committee to consider only the case of the Ogun State exco deemed wise to form a committee for security, peace and Labor Party Dispute Resolution to manage this and all other issues that have to do with grievances and wrongdoing within the party.

"This committee of eleven prominent members will be led by Chief Friday Toyin Ibadin as Chairman.

"With a single mandate to reconcile all aggrieved members with the aim of a united front to win the 2023 general election and Peter Obi and Datti Baba-Ahmed becoming President and Vice President of Nigeria .

"This is the update stemming from the NWC's latest decision regarding the suspension of the Ogun State exco and the sacking of the former Acting Public Secretary of the party and we find it necessary to inform you as partners in the quest of the claimant Nigeria.

“We sincerely hope that all parties concerned will heed this call for peaceful reconciliation and join the Labor Party, Peter Obi and Datti Baba-Ahmed in reclaiming Nigeria from the Nigerian people.

"The fact that the Labor Party is one big family and the fastest growing political party in Africa and as such minor internal conflicts and misunderstandings such as those seen recently cannot be ruled out.The purpose of this committee is therefore to ensure the peaceful resolution of all grievances and to further strengthen and promote the unity of our great party towards the archival goals and tasks that lie ahead of us in 2023 .

"The committee should begin receiving interested members of aggrieved parties immediately to enable it to conclude this mission as soon as possible to deal with further issues.

"It is therefore our humble appeal to all our members to put aside all their grievances and commit themselves to the important step of the internal peace policy of our party for the purpose of peacefully resolving all issues that may have arisen in the course of party activities.”
