Ewan McGregor 'became his grandfather' in new role

From Trainspotting to Star Wars, Ewan McGregor is a man whose career spans the galaxies.

But his latest role takes him back in time.

Almost unrecognizable with a huge mustache and a fear of curly hair, he embodies the new series Paramount Plus A Gentleman in Moscow as Count Alexander Rostov.

We join the Brilliant Period production in 1921 Moscow, four years after the Russian Revolution .

The country's aristocracy risks summary trials and executions. But Rostov – known as Sasha to his friends – escaped death because he wrote a poem that inspired revolutionaries.

He is under house arrest for an indefinite period in the Grand Palace in Moscow. Hotel Metropol and spent the next 32 years living in an attic room under threat of death if he set foot outside.

The series is an adaptation of the 2016 film. best-selling Amor Towles from showrunner and executive producer Ben Vanstone, who worked on The Last Kingdom.

'A treat'

It is directed by Emmy nominee Sam Miller of I May Destroy You.

"The novel is a treat," McGregor said. “And that gave me everything I needed to know about how to play it.”
