EXCLUSIVE: Chanel to rehearse its Métiers d'Art show in Tokyo

Chanel announced on Monday that it will hold a repeat of its 2022-2023 Métiers d'Art collection in June 1 in Tokyo.

The French luxury house made history on December 6 by becoming the first luxury brand European Union to hold a fashion show in sub-Saharan Africa by unveiling its latest craft-focused specialty range in Dakar, Senegal.

In the presence of Pharrell Williams, Naomi Campbell, Whitney Peak, Nile Rodgers, Princess Caroline of Monaco and his daughter Charlotte Casiraghi, the Chanel Métiers d'Art 2022-2023 show was part of a three-day cultural program in the Senegalese capital and "the starting point for an ongoing exchange between the house and Senegal", noted the brand in a statement.

Organizing this rehearsal of its Métiers d'Art show in Tokyo "reaffirms the strength of its close ties with Japan,” the house continued.

The Japanese capital was the first international destination for this traditionally traveling fashion show initiated in 2002 by the late Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld to highlight the work of his in-house workshops.

Since then, Chanel's Métiers d'Art shows have landed in destinations such as Shanghai; Rome; Edinburgh, Scotland; Salzburg, Austria; and Havana, Cuba, all cities linked to the history of the fashion house.

Chanel has also regularly held exhibitions and events in Tokyo, including a revival of the Paris Cosmopolite fashion show, the 2017 Métiers d'Art collection, presented in the baroque Tsunamachi Mitsui Club transformed into an evocation of the Ritz hotel; and the 2014 reiteration of the Paris-Dallas Métiers d'Art, when Chanel built a sprawling Texan saloon-style set in a new high-rise.
