EXCLUSIVE: JAMB extends registration for direct entry

As of Monday, May 15, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) may have concluded plans to expand enrollment for applicants seeking direct admission to universities nationwide.

The registration deadline was previously set for Saturday, May 13. Yet the consistent rowdiness felt over the past week at the review body's Lagos office informed the latest decision.

The new development was confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday night by a senior JAMB official who does not want to be named for not having the authority to give the information.

But the source confirmed that the review body's management deliberated over the weekend on the challenges faced in its offices, particularly in Lagos, and decided to extend the deadline to "ensure that each qualified and willing candidate is duly registered". ."

However, the review agency's head of public affairs and protocol, Fabian Benjamin, neither confirmed nor denied the information.

But Mr. Benjamin said he was sure that any candidate wishing to register for direct registration would be allowed to do so.

Registration Challenges

JAMB recently banned private computerized testing centers from participating in the registration of candidates for direct entry and asked candidates to approach any of its offices nationwide to register .

The centralization of the process, according to the review body, was intended to limit the use of false A-level documents for registration.

JAMB said he had been inundated with complaints of fraud allegedly by applicants, citing the case of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), which he said expelled around 140 students for presenting false A-level results.

JAMB said the centralization of the application process is therefore intended to combat such fraudulent practices and establish a model for the participation of private TCC centers in subsequent years.

But the move has left many candidates stranded with the exam body's office in Lagos, registering a fuss, particularly over the past week.

Disturbing images of candidates sleeping on the floor at JAMB's Ikoyi office in Lagos have constantly surfaced on the internet, forcing NANS management to attend the scene and demand an immediate resolution.

But JAMB faulted the candidates for adopting a last-minute rush, saying that during the first few weeks of the registration period, it saw low attendance.

Speaking earlier on the development, JAMB spokesperson Mr. Benjamin told PREMIUM TIMES, "When we started registration, the offices were nearly empty and the contestants weren't coming. Remember; the DE registration is not a high tech registration; we usually have around 100,000 and sometimes 200,000 applicants who register for the whole year.

So you can imagine where these people are coming from at this exact moment. But as a responsible organization, we will do our best especially for the candidates who purchased the pin code to register. »
