…Three buildings razed

Three children lost their lives in a fire in Rumuochakara Local Government Area, Obio/Akpor, Rivers State.

Our correspondent gathered that the fire which occurred on Monday evening was caused by a candle, but the father of the deceased children denied having a candle in his house.

The fire reportedly spread and leveled two other buildings in the area.

The father of these three children, Uwekwe Solomon, said his other three surviving children who were rescued from hell are now in critical condition.

Mr. Solomon further stated that the children suffered up to 90% burns, saying he had no idea what caused the fire as they had fallen asleep.

The distraught man said, "Yesterday while we were sleeping I heard my wife scream fire fire like in a dream I rushed across fire to try to save my children.

"But I was able to save three, then I lost three to the fire. I slept around eight o'clock. And that happens between 9 and 10 p.m.< /p>

"There is no candle in my house. I don't know how the fire started. I wanted to die with them (the children). I wanted to get into a moving car, but my neighbors held me back."

The bereaved father also said that one of the children who died in hell was his niece who came for the holidays and decided to stay and start school in Port Harcourt, claiming that he had just enrolled her as a student at the start of the new academic term.

“One of them is my sister's child who came on holiday and decided to stay with me and she wanted to start school here in Port Harcourt. So we listed her on Monday. That same Monday, September 26, this thing happened,” he explained, holding back tears.

When contacted, State Police Command spokeswoman Grace Iringe-koko said she had not yet obtained details of the incident at the time of filing this report.
