Fayemi hails Kukah at 70

The Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, congratulated the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Msgr. Matthew Kukah, on his 70th birthday, describing him as a patriot, who speaks truth to power.

Fayemi, who described the cleric as a special breed and a gift to Nigeria and humanity, said Bishop Kukah had been a voice for the vulnerable and less privileged. He noted that the priest had an irrevocable commitment to fight injustice and human rights violations.

The governor, in a statement Wednesday from his chief press secretary, Yinka Oyebode, titled “Fayemi salutes Kukah at 70,” said the cleric’s patriotism “is evident in his contributions to the national discourse. The scholar-priest never hesitated to speak truth to power."

The Governor praised Kukah's virtues of integrity, hard work, resilience and humility, attributes which he said had endeared the priest to people of all tribes and faiths in Nigeria .

He said, “Bishop Kukah embodies humility, courage, integrity and diligence. His passion for the masses, especially the vulnerable and less privileged, is unparalleled. Such a man can be described as a special gift from God to his generation.

"On the occasion of his 70th birthday, I wish him long life and good health so that he may continue his selfless service to humanity. On behalf of my wife, the government and the good people of the State of Ekiti, I congratulate Bishop Kukah and wish him many years of celebration,” Fayemi said.
