FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup: Nigerian Flamingos claim bronze after dramatic win over Germany

The Nigeria Women's U-17 team ended their FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup campaign in style.

After narrowly missing out on a place in the final game, the Flamingos soared to a 3-2 penalty shootout win over Germany on Sunday to clinch the bronze medal.

The Nigerian U-17 team surprisingly lost a three-goal lead as the Germans extended the game on penalties from 3-0 to 3-3.

However, the Flamingos prevailed in the ensuing penalty shootout; winner 3-2.

The Nigerian girls have shown that they have learned from their mistakes from both Germany and Colombia, losing them on different occasions.

At one point in the match, the Flamingos enjoyed a three-goal lead thanks to goals from the trio Opeyemi Ajakaye, Amina Bello and Etim Eddidiong.

However, the Germans responded just as it looked like Nigeria was heading home to victory.

A goal each from Jella Velt and Paulina Bartz and a last-minute overhead kick from Loreen Bender put the Germans on a penalty shootout, but it was the Nigerians who had the last laugh this times.

Germany thought they had broken the deadlock in the fifth minute before a VAR check overturned Marie Steiner's goal two minutes later.

After the VAR respite, the Flamingos punished the German defense with Opeyemi Ajakaye heading to break his goal drought on Chidera Okenwa's cross for a 20th-minute opener.

Two minutes later, Amina Bello nearly doubled the Nigerian lead with her shot which was stopped by the German keeper.

Although there were pockets of chances afterwards for both teams, they were not converted as the Flamingos held on to their slim lead until the break.

The Flamingos got off to a dream start to the second half as Aminat Bello eventually doubled the team's lead just three minutes into the second half.
