A fire razes Osun market shops

A fire on New Years Day razed a row of six shops at the back of Orisumbare New Market in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State.

The hell that started around 2 p.m. Sunday raged for about an hour and a half before firefighters arrived.

Witnesses said property worth millions of naira was totally destroyed.

The stores affected were a furniture workshop, a wholesale store, a beauty and accessories store, and a shoemaker's office.

Ibrahim Adekunle, the Osun State Fire Department spokesman, confirmed the incident.

Mr. Adekunle said the fire started from a burning bush next to the shops.

“About six stores affected, a furniture manufacturing store was completely consumed when the fire started from a nearby bush and some undergrowth was set on fire by an unknown bystander and spread to these stores during the New Year holidays," he said.

“The fire actually affected some containers used as makeshift stores at the back of the new Orisunbare shopping complex,” he added.

Mr. Adekunle, however, said a quick response from firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to the main buildings in Orisumbare market.

"The quick response of firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to the main complex, although it did affect a small section of the main complex's face panel via the rear where the fire started" , he noted.

“The estimated loss from hell cannot be established at the time of the report because most of the owners who can give the actual account of their loss were taken off the premises.”

Meanwhile, the Secretary of State Government, Teslim Igbalaye, visited the scene of the disaster.
