The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Retired), on Sunday blamed water canal buildings, disregard for early warning and climate change for the catastrophic floods ravaging the state of Bayelsa and other parts of the country.

He also directed that all federal rescue and disaster management agencies provide all necessary assistance to the state.

This came after reports from the Bayelsa State government revealed that 700,000 people were displaced in around 300 communities and villages in five of the state's eight local government areas that were submerged by the rains causing flooding.

"As state authorities take action to assist those affected by the flooding, the President has directed all federal agencies responsible for rescue and disaster management to provide all necessary assistance in Bayelsa," a statement signed Sunday evening by the President's spokesman, Garba Shehu, read.

The statement is titled “Give all the help to Bayelsa, President Buhari leads the emergency organs”.

According to Shehu, the president expressed his sadness at the devastation caused by the floods in the state.

He also offered the condolences of the nation to the families of the victims and to all those affected by this natural disaster.

“President Buhari blamed buildings on water canals, disregard for early warning by the National Emergency Management Agency and weather changes caused by climate change as being mainly to blame for the floods that have so far hit 33 of the country's 36 states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory which has not been spared either.

“The president also ordered all those concerned to work for the restoration of normalcy in all affected parts of the federation,” the statement read.
