Footballer collapses and dies on the pitch in Lagos

An unidentified footballer collapsed and died while playing at Green Field football ground in Lekki area, Lagos State.

State Command Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the incident on his verified Twitter account on Monday.

Mr. Hundeyin said officers from the Maroko Police Division brought the information on Friday.

He added that the relatively unknown 31-year-old footballer died around 6.30pm. Friday.

The PPRO said he was rushed to Ever Care Hospital in Lekki for treatment, where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

"Based on the report, a team of detectives visited the football scene and the hospital where the corpse was inspected and photos taken.

“The corpse has been deposited in a public morgue for autopsy. In the meantime, an investigation is underway,” he said.

Mr. Hundeyin, however, advised the public, especially athletes, not to push their limits.

He advised them to rest when they are tired.
