Foundation empowers widows and donates desks to public schools

The Akwa Ibom State-based Innocent Udoidiong Foundation said it has empowered widows and widowers and donated double desks to public primary and secondary schools in the state.

He said the gesture was informed by a report written by a journalist that students at the only secondary school in the Ibeno local government area sat on the bare floor to pass public scrutiny and receive lectures.

Founder and Managing Director of the foundation, Mr. Innocent Udoidiong, who told Etim Ekpo LGA on Friday while presenting double desks, uniforms and a set of school marching bands to four public primary schools du zone, added that learning would not be effective in such an atmosphere where students were sitting on the bare floor to write or learn.

Our correspondent reports that a total of 60 double desks were donated to Nkwot Ikot Ebo Government Primary School, Holy Rosary Catholic School, Ikot Udo Obong, Qua Iboe Church , Oruk Ata 2, while QIC group school Ibio Nnung Achat received uniforms and a school marching band set.

Speaking at the ceremony, Udoidiong, who was represented on the occasion by a member of the foundation, Mr. Anthony Esin, said that the foundation was able to touch the lives of students and students at various schools across the state.

He said: "We are here today to donate these double desks to the Government Primary School, Nkwot Ikot Ebo. We saw the need to support and partner with the government of the state, because education is not something that the government alone should manage; it needs collaboration and partnership.

"Akwa Ibom State has provided free and compulsory education and they have done their best, although what they have done may not be enough to maintain the free and compulsory education.

"As you can see, here is a dilapidated school block, there is another unfinished building there. If you go to the classrooms, you find that the students sometimes sit on the bare floor and some crowd into a particular office to learn. In such an atmosphere, teaching and learning cannot be effective.

"A particular case occurred at a secondary high school in Upenekang, Ibeno Local Government Area, which happens to be the only secondary school in Ibeno LGA. A reporter made a report that the students of this school were sitting on the floor to receive lessons and a written exam and this report caught the attention of the foundation and our CEO graciously approved that we go there and donate double desks and we did some months ago.

"In Uyo, we made a similar gesture at the government primary school, Aka Road, where the students were sitting on the floor, and I would like to report that afterwards, the government saw the need to visit the school and also provide more offices. We have also given grants to widows and widowers to enable them to set up their own business.

“What we are doing today may not be enough, but it is a clear call to other people, individuals and organizations in society to come in support of students in state public schools".

Receiving the desks on behalf of one of the schools, the Principal of Nkwot Ikot Ebo Government Primary School, Mr. Mfon Udoessien, appreciated the gesture of the donor.

He said that before the intervention, he had written several letters to the state government, but to no avail, adding that the intervention had brought great relief to students and teachers.
