Foundation launches basketball championships in Lagos

The Olumide Oyedeji Basketball Foundation announced Thursday in Lagos that a basketball competition for players under the age of 17 will begin on September 17.

Olumide Oyedeji, a former international, said the event would last six weeks. "As many as 400 children will be present at the basketball courts in Ilupeju, Ajegunle, Oworonshoki and Ikorodu," he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event comes just days after the Olumide Oyedeji Basketball Foundation program.

“The Generation Next Basketball Showcase” is a championship that will begin on September 17 at four courts in Lagos State, with the Ilupeju court hosting the opening game.

"This will see the teams divided into groups," Oyedeji said.

"The program is run by the Olumide Oyedeji Youth Foundation and will feature over 300 children under the age of 17 from basketball academies in Lagos State," he said. -it added.

Oyedeji added that matches in the event will be played on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for the next six weeks.

"Teams will be grouped according to their zones for easy access.

"After the Showcase mode of the event concludes, there will be a Final 4 weekend and an All-Stars Game.

"These will be accompanied by other activities before the start of the classic phase with six franchises formed after a combined draft system.

“Sixty players from the more than 300 players who participated in the first phase will be selected from a draft pool.

"Selected players will undergo training, physical testing and play games before being drafted into teams," he said.

Talking about the vision behind the initiative, Oyedeji said, "We want to provide a platform and opportunities for these children to prepare for the next level, to have a taste of professionalism.

“We hope to prepare them for high schools and colleges as six outstanding players (off and on the court) in the 16-week competition will receive scholarships to high schools and colleges based of their age".

Also speaking at the announcement ceremony of the event, the Chief Executive of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Oluwatoyin Gafar, hailed the initiative. (NAN)
