Embezzlement: ICPC detains music star D'banj

The Independent Commission on Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses has arrested and detained Afro Pop maestro, Oladapo Oyebanji, better known as D'banj, for alleged embezzlement of millions of N-Power funds in collaboration with some government officials The PUNCH reports.

He is currently being held at ICPC Headquarters, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Premium Times previously reported exclusively that D'banj was arrested and detained on Tuesday.

An unimpeachable source within the anti-corruption agency confirmed to our correspondent that D'banj was arrested and detained that day after ICPC agents forced him to surrender after having threatened to arrest him anywhere in the world, if he could not appear.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, noted that although D'Banj had already been asked to be interviewed several times, the singer had refused to come forward, saying he was at outside the country for scheduled concerts.< /p>

The source said: "Our investigation shows that D'banj has colluded with some government officials to inject phantom beneficiaries into the payroll of the program. With this, the allowance paid to these phantom beneficiaries is paid directly on bank accounts linked to the singer.

"Upon his arrival, he was questioned for hours, after which he was detained and his request for administrative bail was rejected by the authorities, for lack of confidence."

The source, who noted that an official statement will be released soon, confirmed that D'Banj will be arraigned this week, for an extended remand order to allow for further investigation before finally indict him in court to address the allegations.

ICPC spokesperson Ms. Azuka Ogugua did not take calls or respond to text messages from our correspondent on Wednesday morning.

The PUNCH reports that Ogugua and other senior ICPC officials are currently on an overseas program.
