Financing educational institutions is a collective responsibility — Ibadan Poly rector

The Rector of Ibadan Polytechnic (TPI), Professor Kazeem Adekunle Adebiyi, has identified adequate funding and its proper management as the foundation of a viable education system.

He also said that funding for the educational institution should not be left in the hands of the government alone, saying it is a collective responsibility.

Professor Adebiyi spoke at the 46th Polytechnic and Technology Bursars Association (BURSCON) 2022, organized by Ibadan Polytechnic and held at the institution's CIBN Hall last Tuesday.< /p>

He noted that in this time of resource scarcity, it has become appropriate for fellows to come together to see how they can best help their various institutions meet their financial obligations.

“It cannot be overemphasized bringing together Fellows who are the CFOs of their institutions at a time like this. It is timely for them to come and share their experiences and ideas on how to improve the 'IGR from their different institutions,' he said.

He appreciated the association for choosing Ibadan Polytechnic as the venue for its 46th quarterly meeting, which was held for three days and its efforts to help fellows to be the best in their various institutions .

In his address, the Financial Secretary of BURSCON, Mr. Kassim Yusha'u Shika, who represented the National President of BURSCON, Dr. Salisu I. Ladan, said that the pursuit of more higher education or the like is a problem that cannot be solved soon.

He noted, however, that through the financial perspectives of fellows, there are strategies that could be used to overcome or reduce financial burdens on institutions to a bare minimum.

Speaking on the purpose of the 46th quarterly meeting, he said it was to create a means for financial controllers of higher education institutions in the polytechnic sector to come together to review their internal operations in order to see how they can improve in terms of reducing their operating costs and improving internally generated revenues for the achievement of the core mandate of research, teaching and innovation.

Earlier in his speech, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of TPI, Prof. Adekunle Akinyemi observed that “the challenges faced by higher education institutions are by no means uncommon”, therefore, the ingenuity of management must be taken into account in administering the meager funds available to meet institutional needs.

“All avenues should be explored to ensure appropriate disbursement of funds towards the achievement of institutional goals and objectives,” he said.
