Video game players were blindsided by a “garbage” union agreement on AI

Prominent players say they were not informed of a deal history defining how voices generated by artificial intelligence (AI) can be used in games.
This was launched by the American actors union Sag -Aftra and the AI company Replica Studios.
The union claims to guarantee “fully informed consent and fair compensation” to its members.
But many voice artists, who have long feared that AI would replace them, reacted with fury, with one calling the deal "rubbish." .
In an email to members, seen by the BBC, Sag-Aftra said the deal was negotiated by a committee which included " actors with significant and diverse experience in games."
"The contract has been specifically tailored to the needs. of voice actors, ensuring informed consent and appropriate remuneration conditions that are specific to this set of artists," he said.
This comes after Sag-Aftra led a months-long strike in 2023 to fight for the protection of film and TV studios using AI.
