Nasarawa Assembly resolves crisis and elects new president

The 24-member Nasarawa State Assembly re-elected the outgoing Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Abdullahi, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress and represents Umaisha/Ugya Constituency, as Speaker of the 7th Assembly.

Members also elected the Hon. Abel Bala of the Peoples Democratic Party, who represents Nassarawa Eggon West Constituency as Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.

Acting Clerk of the House Ibrahim Musa revealed this during the investiture of members of the 7th Assembly in Lafia on Friday.

The Registrar explained that the inauguration was in accordance with the proclamation of Governor Abdullahi Sule, as well as the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In his acceptance speech, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Abdullahi, is committed to providing inclusive leadership in the interests of peace and state development.

He said, "I would like to congratulate all of you, honorable members, on your inauguration and on electing me President of the 7th Assembly.

“I have presided over the business of this Assembly for the past eight years with all due fairness and the fear of God. I want to assure you that I will continue in this spirit. I will also continue to operate an open door policy as I have done for the past eight years.”

While assuring the assembly staff of his continued commitment to improving their welfare, the speaker expressed his gratitude to Governor Abdullahi Sule for his role in resolving the crisis.

“We also want to thank the Governor for renovating the House of Assembly for efficient service delivery. We will partner with other branches of government to achieve rapid development across the state,” he added.

Earlier, Hon. Mohammed Oyanki (PDP-Doma North constituency) appointed Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Abdullahi for the position of President, and he was seconded by Hon. Larry Bawa (APC-Akwanga North constituency).

For the position of vice-president, the Hon. Ibrahim Peter-Akwe (PDP - Obi Constituency 1) appointed Hon. Abel Bala for the position, and he was seconded by Hon. Suleiman Azara (APC-Awe South constituency).

The Clerk then inaugurated the Speaker and Deputy Speaker while the other members of the House of Assembly were inaugurated by the Speaker.
