Ganduje presents Kano's 2023 budget to lawmakers

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has presented a N245 billion budget for the financial year 2023 to the State Legislative Assembly for approval.

Presenting the proposal titled "Consolidation and Prosperity Budget II" on Friday in Kano, Ganduje said it aims to consolidate and improve the welfare of the people of the state.

He said the budget consists of N144 billion for capital expenditure, or 59%, and N100 billion for recurrent expenditure, or 41%.

"The health sector was allocated N39.1 billion; water resources N15 billion; transport sector N8.6 billion; agricultural sector N19.9 billion while works and infrastructure got N35 billion,” he said.

The governor said the education sector got the lion's share of the budget with N62 billion, 27% more than the UNESCO and UN recommendation.

He said the money would be channeled towards implementing policies and programs to ensure quality education at all levels.

Mr. Ganduje said some of the money would also be used to improve the state's free and compulsory education program.

He urged lawmakers to ensure swift passage of the budget, to enable the government to continue delivering the dividends of democracy to the people.

The governor also urged young people to avoid all forms of violence, especially as the 2023 general election draws closer.

The President, Hamisu Chidari, assured the Governor of the speedy passage of the budget to create time for the budget circle from January to December.

He urged Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to be ready for the defense of the budget in the House.

The speaker also commended the governor for his progress in infrastructure development, security, health and the education sector.
