Gary Lineker speaks out on BBC's 'disproportionate' row in his first TV appearance

Lineker released a statement on Twitter earlier this week following the announcement of his comeback. He said: "After a surreal few days, I'm glad we made it through.

"I want to thank you all for your incredible support, especially my colleagues at BBC Sport for the remarkable show of solidarity. Football is a team game, but their support has been overwhelming.

"I have presented sport on the BBC for almost 3 decades and I am immensely proud to work with the best and fairest broadcaster in the world. I look forward to taking over the chairmanship of MOTD on Saturday.

"One final thought: As difficult as the last few days are, it just doesn't compare to having to flee your home from persecution or war to seek refuge in a distant land. It's heartwarming to "to have seen the empathy towards their plight from so many of you. We remain a largely tolerant, welcoming and generous country. Thank you."
