While his spring women's collection for Givenchy saw Matthew Williams more openly embrace French chic, the designer remains very much an American in Paris.
The label's pre-fall range reflects its transatlantic vision of the house founded by Hubert de Givenchy in 1952 , with a mix of sharp cuts, elegant evening wear and sporty casual outfits that reflected the eclectic tastes of today's luxury clientele.
Some might be looking for a cropped black denim jacket and baggy pants that have been washed and distressed for a Y2K vibe. Others might opt for a black cocktail dress with rhinestone-embellished circular cutouts at the chest and hip, similar to the embroidery detailing on the custom Givenchy design Adele wore recently while on residency in Las Vegas. p>

Or why not have it both ways? An oversized white tuxedo jacket was paired with shredded cargo shorts, reflecting Williams' own approach to high-low dressing. "I sometimes wear blazers with formal tech pants or denim," he said, noting that he also likes a tuxedo lapel in the daytime. "That's how I really like wearing suits, so it's really exploring that."
The founder of 1017 Alyx 9SM is as passionate about denim washes as he is about material details, meaning even his streetwear looks are still razor sharp.
"It's also in Hubert's DNA. He talked a lot about using the the more humble fabrics to create dresses, or the more opulent, but nothing in between. I think it's interesting, this clash of two extremes and finding tensions in these spaces," Williams said.
>With their mismatched patterns and injection of flamboyant color, her masculine looks were a teaser for her upcoming show masculine in January, peppered with references to Americana such as plaid shirts, varsity-style sweatshirts and work jackets, including a black leather version with the Givenchy name spelled out in metallic studs.
