Group request INEC to do CVR before Imo, Bayelsa, Kogi guber

A civil society organization, Catch them Young Community Initiative (CATYCOI), has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial elections in the states of Imo, Bayelsa and Kogi.

The group expressed concern over youth participation in the November 11 gubernatorial elections in Imo State. CATYCOI Executive Director Nonso Orakwe said in a statement yesterday that INEC's failure to conduct CVRs ahead of the elections would disenfranchise many young people in the states.

He said: "We are concerned that there is no sign that INEC will conduct a CVR in Imo, given the short time left before the gubernatorial election.< /p>

"Section 9(6) of the Elections Act 2022 provides that 'Voter registration, updating and review of the register of voters, under this section, shall not cease more than 90 days before any election covered by this Act.' Under this section of the law, it is mandatory for INEC to continue registering new voters until August.”

“It is imperative to note that many young Imo have turned 18 since the suspension of the CVR exercise in July 2022. Others were unable to complete their registration or register at all before the suspension of the last financial year.

"We call on the INEC to immediately put in place measures to ensure TRC in the state. If this is not done, dozens of young people will be disenfranchised.

"CATYCOI, in partnership with other state organizations, is ready to help mobilize IMO youth to enroll."

The group noted that while young people constitute the majority of registered voters in Nigeria, they also constitute the largest number of citizens who are not yet registered. He therefore called on INEC to ensure that young people in IMO can register and make their voices heard in the November 11 gubernatorial elections.
