Rainstorm destroys over 3,800 homes and kills 5 people in Katsina – SEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has revealed that five people lost their lives and as many as 3,813 houses were destroyed by torrential rains in 13 local government areas of Katsina State this year.

SEMA spokesman Mr. Umar Muhammad said that while three out of five people were killed by the rainstorm in the Kankara local government area, the other two occurred in the area of the local government of Mai'adua.

Umar gave the breakdown of destroyed houses across the state as follows:

“In Kankara local government area, 176 houses were destroyed; in Danja LGA, 125 houses were destroyed while 86 houses were destroyed in Kankia LGA.

“In the local government area of ​​Katsina, 620 houses were destroyed; in Musawa local government area, 482 houses were destroyed while 361 were destroyed in Batagarawa local government area.

“In Kusada local government area, 311 houses were destroyed; in Sabuwa local government area, 111 houses were destroyed, while Zango local government area lost 105 houses,” he said.

Umar also noted that 443 houses were lost in Batsari Local Government Area.

He listed five other areas where torrential rains wreaked havoc, including Mashi, Mani, Mai'adua, Dandume and Matazu.

According to the SEMA Spokesperson, “The state government is working tirelessly to prevent further flooding and to this effect has formed a committee to work for the prevention of the outbreak of cholera in the affected communities ."

To cushion the effects of the disaster, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar-Farouq, on September 1, 2022 presented seven truckloads of assorted relief materials through from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to the state government for onward distribution to affected victims
