Guinness artist John Gilroy's bar mural restored

Artists Sarah Daniels and Sarah Hodgkins restore part of mural showing coach struggling on Scotch Corner road in snow

In the most traditional of bars, in a former coaching inn near the northern moors of the Pennines, is a unique work of art.

The walls of the Morritt Arms Hotel at Greta Bridge, near Barnard Castle, County of Durham, are adorned with a huge mural, painted almost 80 years ago by an artist who went on to become one of the best known and popular of the 20th century.

Made in the space of just a few days, John Gilroy painted a Dickensian scene of decadence and humour, using regulars and bar staff of the time as characters.

Annie Mason has worked at the hotel for years.

"Legend has it that John Gilroy had raised a bill at the bar. Basically, for the gin he drank while he was here."

To pay the bill , he painted the fresco.
