Gunmen invade Imo community, kill seven security guards and injure two others
Gunmen invaded the Umuafom community of Orogwe in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, killing seven on-duty local security officers and seriously injuring two other residents of the area< /p>
According to a community source, the gunmen who arrived in two vehicles and a cyclist at around 9:30 p.m. caught the guards off guard and shot them at different locations.
While four of them were reportedly shot in a building not far from a hospital, the other three were shot inside a new building in the neighborhood called Corpers Lodge.
The source further revealed that two other people also fell victim to the gunmen as they tried to flee to safety.
One of the victims, a commercial motorcyclist, was shot in the leg and had his bike taken from him.
He is reportedly being treated at Federal Medical Center (FMC) Owerri, while the other victim was stabbed with a machete.
Meanwhile, there is high panic in the community following the attack by the gunmen as some residents temporarily leave their homes for security reasons.
State Police spokesman CSP Mike Abattam confirmed the incident when contacted.
However, he said he could not yet determine if those killed were security guards.
But he assured us that the police are already on the trail of the suspects even as he pleaded with the community to remain calm.
