Gunmen on Saturday killed the president of the Apomu branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Ali Kazeem

Mr. Kazeem, who was also a leader of the All Progressives Congress in the Isokan local government area of ​​the state, was reportedly killed when gunmen attacked his vehicle near a stream in the Oke-Alfa area of ​​Apomu .

“He was killed around 8 and 9 p.m. between Oke-Alfa and the Timberland area at the area creek,” said a source who requested anonymity for fear for his life.

“He was chased to the spot by two vehicles. The cars followed him to the point where his car was attacked and he was killed.”

Tajudeen Bello, the Isokan Local Government Area Secretary, confirmed the attack on the NURTW chair.

"Alhaji Kazeem was killed by gunmen last night," Bello said.

“He played a major role in the 2022 Osun State Governor election. As Chairman of NURTW, he ordered all its members to vote for the APC and threatened that anyone who votes for the PDP would be treated as long as he was the president. He was reported to the palace and he stood by his words."

The police react

When contacted, Yemisi Opalola, the state police spokesperson, said that Mr. Kazeem had been abducted and taken away by unknown persons.

“Credible information received revealed that Apomu Branch 1 NURTW Chairman Ali Kazeem aka Kekere Kazuma was taken away by unknown persons,” Ms Opalola said.

The police spokesman noted that eight people had been arrested in connection with the attack.

Ms Opalola said the NURTW chair had been macheted by his captors before he was taken away with an unregistered vehicle.

“The victim actually left the motor parked in Apomu and was found in the Oke Afa area of ​​Apomu where he was forcibly arrested, pulled from his ash colored Toyota Corolla reg no APM 203 AA, machete and taken away by the attackers.

"It was further established that the attackers had come with an unregistered black Toyota Corolla car."
