Hayden Panettiere opens up about her battle with opioid and alcohol addiction

ABC

Hayden Panettiere opens up for the first time about a secret addiction to opioids and alcohol...saying it had a huge impact on her life and career.

The 'Nashville' star, in an interview on 'Good Morning America', said she struggled with substance abuse, as well as a battle with postpartum depression after her 7-year-old daughter, Kaya, said, "I was on top of the world and I ruined it."

Hayden says that at one point her alcohol addiction got so bad that she was hospitalized with jaundice and doctors warned her liver was about to fail. Now, she says, trauma therapy and inpatient treatment over the past year has brought her to a place of peace...but it took a lot of work.

As a childhood star, she says someone on her team gave her "happy pills" before she appeared on red carpets: "They were supposed to give me a boost during the interviews. I had no idea it wasn't an appropriate thing, or what door it would open for me when it came to my addiction."

She says that as the addiction got worse, she had a place of sobriety, "My saving grace is that I couldn't be messy while filming and working... But, things just kept going. not to get out of control [off set]. And as I got older, drugs and alcohol became things I could hardly live without."

We last saw Hayden when she was in a massive fight with boyfriend Brian Hickerson in March. Now she seems to be better than ever, happy to have a second chance.
