I benefited from Buhari signing the electoral law - Adeleke

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke on Friday hailed the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Retired) for signing the Election Law (2022).

According to him, the bill, which he says enshrines free and fair elections, facilitated his emergence as governor in the July 16, 2022 elections.

Adeleke said this when he revealed the talking points from his meeting with the President around 11:00 a.m. at State House, Abuja.

This is Adeleke's first meeting with the president since he took office in November 2022.

While briefing reporters, he said: "Since my election, I felt that I had to come and say hello to Mr. President and thank him for signing this electoral law, because I benefited.

"This paved the way for free and fair elections and the international community applauds Nigeria, that Nigeria is ready for democracy.

"That's why I'm here today; to see him, thank him, and wish him luck in his remaining time in office."

Adeleke revealed that he will engage with the President's Chief of Staff to devise an appropriate framework for collaboration between the Osun State Government and the Federal Government.

“I will see the Chief of Staff so that we can discuss the way forward for the federal government to help Osun State,” he said.

The PUNCH reports that Buhari signed into law the 2022 Elections Amendment Bill on February 25, 2022.

The President asserted that the legislation contains important provisions that could positively revolutionize elections in Nigeria through new technological innovations.

“These innovations would guarantee the constitutional rights of citizens to vote and to vote effectively.

“The bill would also improve and engender clarity, efficiency and transparency in the electoral process, as well as minimize instances of acrimony resulting from disgruntled candidates and political parties,” Buhari said.

Five months later, Adeleke, the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples' Democratic Party, won 403,371 votes to defeat former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress, who garnered 375,027 votes.< /p>
