"I have delivered over 150 roads in Abia" - Gov Ikpeazu

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State said his administration had delivered more than 150 roads to the state over the past seven years to boost its socio-economic development.

Mr. Ikpeazu said this to Umuahia on Saturday in a broadcast to commemorate the 31st anniversary of Abia State.

Abia was created on August 27, 1991 by the military administration headed by Ibrahim Babangida.

Governor Ikpeazu described the road projects as "monuments" that would testify to the work of his administration.

He said the roads would also help stem rural-urban drift.

"We have carried out many pioneering and indelible infrastructure projects in various sectors of Abia.

"A project like the Osisioma interchange has forever changed the traffic narrative at this junction.

“The other roads we have built around Umuahia are all immeasurably important to the continued economic dynamism of Abia,” he said.

Mr. Ikpeazu said 48 road projects are underway and efforts are being made to complete them by May 29, 2023.

He said the state government has drawn up a long-term development plan and industrial policy as part of efforts to encourage sustainable development in Abia.

The governor added that the state government has put in place programs that have increased primary school enrollment from 150,000 in 2015 to around 700,000 in 2022.

He, however, lamented that his administration faces challenges, particularly in the area of security and the management of payroll, payroll, pensions and other workers' emoluments, adding that efforts were deployed to solve the problems.

Mr. Ikpeazu instructed the people of Abia to participate in the 2023 general elections with decorum and respect for the unity of the state.

He said security agencies had been put on high alert to ensure that the peace and unity of the state were not compromised in the name of politics and the election campaign.< /p>

"There can never be meaningful development in an atmosphere of resentment and strife.

"We must remember that we have no place to call home but Abia. We will not burn down our own house to spite our brothers.

"No one's ambition is worth disrupting the peace of Abia and we will work with the security agencies to enforce that," he said.

Mr. Ikpeazu also called for the support and cooperation of the people of Abia to make the state a safe haven for investors in the coming days.
