Ibori's lawyer to pay £28m - UK court orders

A UK court has ordered a former lawyer for James Ibori, the former governor of Delta State, to pay £28million for helping to conceal illegally obtained funds.

The lawyer, Bhadresh Gohil, who is also Indian, was convicted in 2010 of 13 counts of money laundering and other offenses related to his role in helping the Ibori to cover up the proceeds of crime.

Gohil was sentenced to ten years in prison in 2010 and has served half his sentence.

According to Reuters, Gohil was ordered on Monday to pay more than £28million or face a further six-year sentence.

DAILY POST reports that the court's decision came after Ibori was ordered last week to pay £101.5 million ($130 million) on pain of eight years in prison.

However, Ibori had pledged to appeal the British court's decision.
