The Acting Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has instituted a seven-man Board of Inquiry, headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force's Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja, Abiodun Alabi, with a mandate to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a Police Cadet, Sulaiman Jika, at the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.

Other panel members include Deputy Inspector General for Training and Development, Oyeyemi Oyediran; Force Physician, CP Garba Nzukwen; CP Homicide FCID, Fom-Pam Joseph, CP POLAC Training, CP Patrick Edung; a representative from CP Legal as Secretary, and IG Principal Staff Officer II, ACP Idris Abubakar.

Egbetokun also ordered the committee to provide his office with a full report detailing its findings and recommendations within four days; while extending his sincere condolences and commiserations to the family, relations and the academic community of Jika, and assuring that he was deeply empathetic in the face of their pain and loss; and that the Force would do what is necessary to ensure that justice is served in this case.

A cadet, who also asked not to be identified, said there was usually a high daily traffic of sick cadets in the unmanned clinic.

He said, “Since the new commander took office, they have provided us with very bad and inadequate food. The deceased boy was not 20 years old. The boy wouldn't have died if they had taken care of him. The commandant also ordered the closure of the market and the laundry and approved undeserved drills during school hours.

“Cadets are collapsing daily here during training from fatigue, either because they are starving or malnourished or both. We are usually threatened by the commander and forced to participate in unwarranted training exercises. Additionally, many cadets were fired on the grounds that they had fallen ill; this is why many try to fend for themselves to avoid being expelled from the academy. »

Staff members who spoke to our correspondent complained about the academy's monthly food allowance. A source close to the functioning of the academy revealed that some of the money was usually diverted to private pockets by some senior officials.
