IGP excited as court overturns jail order

Inspector General of Police Usman Baba has praised the Federal High Court in Abuja for quashing contempt proceedings and a committal order against him.

It was then that he reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force under his leadership to uphold and uphold the rule of law and ensure the continued protection of the basic rights of all people.

The PUNCH reports that a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, presided over by Justice Bolaji Olajuwon, on Wednesday quashed the contempt proceedings and the committal order against the office of the IGP.

The court also released and acquitted the IGP of the conviction and three-month sentence.

This follows a motion filed in the Federal High Court on December 1, outlining the reasons why the order should be set aside, especially as the NPF has argued that it s complied with the court's original decision for the reinstatement of a Patrick Okoli, the plaintiff in the case.

The PUNCH reports that the earlier decision was based on a reinstatement order for the plaintiff, whose dismissal was found to be unfair by the court.

In a statement on Wednesday, Force spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi said it was interesting to note that previous IGPs had complied with the order in accordance with the authority statute of the office of the IGP.

Adejobi said, "This is due to several letters and reminders previously sent to the Police Services Board, the body statutorily charged with carrying out these reinstatements, requesting compliance with the order of the court to reinstate and promote the officer to his deserved rank.

"The learned judge in his ruling found that the IGP had substantially complied with the court's judgment previously rendered in 2011 since 2015, and is therefore entitled to acquittal, and has so therefore acquitted of any wrongdoing. ”

In another development, the IGP has redeployed Assistant Inspector General of Police, Southeast Geopolitical Area, John Amadi, who until then was responsible for the Department of Research and Planning, for the Department of Logistics and Supply, Force Headquarters, Abuja, following the retirement of DIG Zanna Ibrahim.

The decision, according to the IGP, is to promote professionalism and efficiency within the NPF.

Adejobi said: "Similarly, new leaders have been assigned to some commands and formations to ensure that officers are tasked with roles commensurate with their professional abilities and capabilities.

"Other newly assigned senior officers include CP Patrick Longe who takes over as Police Commissioner in charge of Osun State Police Command, CP Adepoju Ilori who takes in Charge Police Special Fraud Unit, Annex FCID, Lagos as of 28 December 2022, CP Isyaku Mohammed appointed as Chief Accounts and Police Budget Officer, and CP Faleye Olaleye as CP Administration, FCID , Force Headquarters, Abuja.”
