PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday reassured Nigerians that he would hand over an insecure Nigeria to the next set of leaders in 2023, assuring his administration would stamp out all forms of banditry, crime, terrorism and insurrection.

Buhari gave the assurance during the National Honors Award 2022 investiture held at the Abuja International Conference Center where 440 distinguished Nigerians and seven foreigners received various national honours.

"We will continue to eradicate all forms of banditry, criminality, terrorism and insurgency in the country.

"As I declared earlier in my independence address to the nation, I will hand over a Nigeria free from insecurity to the next generation of leaders," Buhari assured.

According to the president, the national honors were not just a decoration but a reminder of the responsibility of citizens, saying that "we must always strive to do our best for our country".

Describing the event as a solemn and patriotic one, Buhari said the laureates had distinguished themselves in the service of the nation and humanity, adding that he conferred the honors on them in accordance with the Law on Human Rights. national honors CAP N43 from the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

Their shortlisting and selection, according to the President, followed broad established criteria, including, but not limited to, "consistent and meaningful participation in community and/or national development.

Buhari recalled that since the establishment of his administration, there had been no investiture of national honors like yesterday's event "except for the special investiture ceremony in the honor of Chief MKO Abiola, Alhaji Baba Gana Kingibe and Chief Gani Fawehinmi".

According to him, their swearing-in ceremony was "specifically organized to right the wrongs committed in the past, to appease our feelings and to resolve us to stand firm now and in the future for the sanctity of the electoral process and of our democracy.

"Similarly, our country's athletes have also been honored recently for their spectacular performances in several competitions."
