A former acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, described his exit from the anti-corruption agency as a fight against corruption.

News Agency of Nigeria reported that Magu spoke on Sunday in Abuja at an awards ceremony held in his honor by the Association students from the North.

"I am a victim of corruption fighting back, but I am happy that recent events are revealing the truth to Nigerians," he said.

Magu, who was represented by his son, Mr. Mohammad-Saeed Ibrahim-Magu, thanked the association for awarding him the "Achiever Par Excellence" award and said he was happy to receive the award.

Spokeswoman for the association, which includes female students from universities in northern Nigeria, Aisha Nasir, explained that Magu was unanimously chosen for the award for her dedication to service national.

She said, "Combating corruption in Nigeria is a binding moral duty that requires looking beyond political affiliations or preferences.

"Love him or hate him, Ibrahim Magu has taken the fight against corruption to uncharted levels that many thought they could never reach.

"Magu has received continental and global accolades for tackling what has been described as the single biggest factor impeding the growth and development of African nations and economies.

NAN reports that the award came on the heels of the October 4 FCT High Court judgment by Judge Yusuf Halilu.

Judge Halilu exonerated Magu of a false claim that Pastor Emmanuel Omale of the Divine Hand of God Prophetic Ministry and his wife, Deborah, laundered 573 million naira for the former boss of the EFCC.

The money was allegedly used by the cleric to purchase property for Magu in Dubai.

Judgment has been rendered on the lawsuit marked: FCT/HC/CV2541/2020 filed by Omale, his wife and the church against the church bank.

During the investigation of Magu by the retired Presidential Inquiry Committee headed by retired Judge Isa Salami, it was claimed that an investigation by the Nigerian Unit financial intelligence revealed that Magu paid N573 million into the Omale church account.

Judge Halilu noted in his judgment, however, that the evidence presented to his court showed that Omale's bank had admitted an error in its report to the NFIU, regarding entries in the account of the prophetic ministry of the divine hand of God.

The judge further found that the bank claimed that the alleged N573m had been incorrectly reflected as a credit entry to the church's account by its reporting system, which it recently updated.

Judge Halilu noted that the bank acknowledged the error, which caused incalculable damage to the reputations of Pastor Omale, his wife and their church within and outside outside the country.

Magu was suspended as Acting President of EFCC in 2020.
