I'm no superman but I will end the oil theft, government leaks - Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labor Party (LP) presidential flag bearer, has said that if elected in 2023, his government would overhaul the country's security architecture and rekindle trust between the government and the people to establish a new economic order.

Mr. Obi said this during the 2023 Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Private Sector Economic Forum on the 2023 Presidential Election on Monday in Lagos.

According to him, any government that takes power in 2023 will face daunting challenges; both internal and external that have degenerated over the years due to failed leadership.

These challenges, Mr. Obi said, have had a negative impact on the country's unity, social cohesion, trust in government, wealth, education, employment, health, trade and other clues.

The LP presidential standard bearer stressed that the country was not devoid of good ideas and plans, but that institutional weakness and a lack of political will to implement them had limited its economic potential.

Mr. Obi said that in addition to overhauling the entire security architecture, his government would ensure multi-level policing at the federal, state and community levels, and properly equip them with modern gadgets to liberate the economy from the woes of insecurity.

He said that upon becoming president, his government would streamline governance to ensure it was responsive, transparent and effective; ensure institutional reforms and engender inclusive participation of all groups.

Mr. Obi said the country must hold its government accountable in terms of visible and measurable changes in security, manufacturing for export, and using and upholding the rule of law to consolidate Nigerian democracy. /p>

"Good governance should aim to provide good service and receive constructive criticism and move forward with the aim of restoring people's trust in governance.

"Under my leadership, all groups such as youth, women, the disabled, the vulnerable and the private sector shall be represented in the decision-making process of my government, as I am committed to providing focused leadership on request.

"As a trader, I am one of you and sincerely acknowledge your challenges and pain, and would provide my own solutions to the issues that have been raised, especially security which impacts on all other economic issues.

“We have identified and prioritized seven critical areas in line with selected Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to provide determined leadership as we secure and unite Nigeria with effective legal and institutional reforms,” he said .

Mr. Obi said that to cope with the country's income and other economic crises, his administration would invest in manufacturing to move the country from consumption to production and export.

He said his government would also create an asset registry and ensure that the country's assets become more productive under genuine private sector oversight.

He said that in addition to tackling insecurity, the issue of power generation must be tackled head-on by liberalizing transmission and supporting existing power generation companies.

These, Mr. Obi said, would ensure that the power sector was properly aligned with clear policies and the regulatory environment.

"To solve the electricity problem, the first thing to do is to provide access to finance, tax incentives and to solve the problem of integrated electricity and renewable energies.

"I'm not saying I'm going to be a superman, but I'm going to bring the political will to uphold the rule of law, address issues of oil theft, and address government revenue leakages to make in the face of funding from the Union of Academic Staff of Universities (ASUU).

"I'm offering the opportunity to do the right thing and make sure it gets done from 2023.

"Nigeria's problems, while daunting and difficult, can be solved and my call is that elections in 2023 should not be based on ethnicity, but on competence and accountability", a- he said.

LCCI President Michael Olawale-Cole said the overshadowing effect of politics on the economy prompted the chamber to hold the event as its contribution to a new economic order that could bring the Nigerian economy in the doldrums.
