IMO Senator-elect Osita Izunaso Visits Buhari, Says He's Most Qualified To Be Senate Speaker

Osita Izunaso, the elected senator from Imo West Senatorial District, met with President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday and called for the zoning of the Senate Presidency to the southeast.

Mr. Izunaso, who is also in the running for the Senate presidency, told reporters after the meeting that the zoning of the southeast position was only fair.

He added that he was optimistic about getting the job because of his experience as a legislator.

Mr. Izunaso was a member of the House of Representatives before joining the Senate in 2007.

Currently, several sitting senators and elected senators have declared their interest in the presidency of the Senate.

They include Sani Musa (APC, Niger), Governor Dave Umahi (APC, Ebonyi), Senate Whip Orji Kalu (APC, Abia), Abdulaziz Yari (APC, Zamfara) and Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano ) .

There are also indications that Aliyu Wamakko (APC, Sokoto) is watching the position.

The ruling party has not yet taken a position on the zoning of the main offices, however, some of them have started campaigning in anticipation of the party's decision.

Asked about his chances against other southern candidates, Mr. Izunaso said being a ranking senator puts him in a strong position to land the position against other candidates.

He said that no senator from the APC platform in the Southeast and South-South ranks higher than him.

"If both in the Southeast and in the South-South, I think the question should be obvious. I am the eldest, there is no senator today in the APC , South-East or South-South which is older than me in the Senate and which is an institution that believes in the rankings, so I am the highest ranking senator in the South-East and South-South”, a- he said.

“I came to the Senate in 2007, I was in the House of Representatives, I have been in the party for five good and solid years. I led the party to the best of my ability as national secretary at the organization of this party that carried us to victory in 2015 and 2019, so I think we have paid our dues,” he said.

The National Assembly will be inaugurated in June.
