INEC detects several double entries in the CVR

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) detected numerous double, multiple and ineligible registrations during the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) held between January 15 and July 31.

The National Commissioner of INEC and Chairman of the Voter Information and Education Committee, Festus Okoye, made the statement in a statement released Monday in Abuja.

He said the irregularities were discovered while cleaning the voter register using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).

“The ABIS for the period from January 15 to July 31, 2022 is almost complete. Several duplicate, multiple and ineligible registrants were also detected and invalidated.

"These include entries that have not complied with the Commission's business rules. The Commission takes this responsibility seriously because a credible register is at the heart of electoral integrity.

"As soon as the process is complete, the Commission will provide full information to the public as usual.

"Thereafter, valid registrants will be added to the existing National Register of Electors before publishing it nationwide for review, complaints and objections, as required by the Elections Act 2022.

"Similarly, permanent voter cards for all valid registrants will be available for collection by the end of October and beginning of November, as promised," he said.

INEC previously said that of the 2,523,458 registrations made between June 28, 2021 and January 14, the registrations of 1,126,359 registrants were found to be invalid and therefore expunged.
