CAF Women's Champions League: Bayelsa Queens make history with ticket to semi-finals

Nigeria's Bayelsa Queens reached the CAF Women's Champions League semi-final for the first time after Sunday night's 3-0 win over Egyptian champions Wadi Degla at Prince Heritier Stadium.< /p>

Wadi Degla, who was unbeaten in his two previous encounters against West African sides, could not match the superior prowess of Bayelsa Queens.

Juliet Sunday's first-half goal and Mercy Itimi's second-half brace helped Prosperity Girls advance to the semi-finals

The Nigerian team got to work as soon as possible with an eight-minute finish from Juliet Sunday who capitalized on the error of the Egyptian keeper.

But the Prosperity girls fell short of the first goal scored throughout the first half as the duo of Itimi Mercy and Etim Edidiong failed to reach the target when they had the chance.

With a goal in hand for Bayelsa Queens, there was already a glimpse of a possible qualification for the ladies.

Another strong start to the second half saw Bayelsa Queens double their lead when Itimi Mercy netted the Nigerian champions goal in the 48th minute.

Five minutes later, she scored her brace to seal second place and semi-final qualification for the Nigerian side.

Substitute Grace Igbomalu thought she had added another goal, but that was ruled out in the 90th minute after a VAR check spotted an infraction in the build-up to the goal.

Bayelsa Queens will face FAR Rabat next week in the semi-finals.

Elsewhere, Mamelodi Sundowns beat 10-woman TP Mazembe 4-0 to advance to the next round of the Champions League. The defending champions won all three group stage matches to continue their quest for a second consecutive title.

First-half goals - by Zanele Nhalfho from the penalty spot and finishing by Lelona Daweti on a well-constructed attack from Melinda - gave Sundowns the start they wanted.

Subsequently, Melinda Kgadiete's quick second-half goal and Salome Kekana's last-minute arrival extended the lead to four for the South African side on Mazembe who faced another unfortunate situation following a red card awarded to his player in the 85th minute.< /p> Support the integrity and credibility journalism of PREMIUM TIMES Good journalism costs a lot of money.
