INEC subjected Nigeria to international mockery - former Senate Speaker Wabara

Nanna Nwogu – Umuahia

A former Senate Speaker and Chairman of the Board, BoT, of the People's Democratic Party, PDP, Adolphus Wabara, says INEC's disgraceful conduct at the polls has made Nigeria a mockery in front of the community international.

Wabara, who spoke to reporters in Umuahia, expressed his disappointment at the failure of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to upload the results of last Saturday's presidential and National Assembly elections directly from polling stations, contrary to his earlier assurances.

He dismissed the polls as a disgrace because of the way INEC handled them after people turned out in droves to vote and called for the polls to be canceled outright and for a a new election if the unity and continued existence of the country mattered to those behind what he called the large-scale rape and murder of Nigerian democracy.

"It's a sham! You can see from international observers how they have condemned what we call elections in the 21st century.

“So this thing must be undone for the sake of Nigeria and the unity of the country.

"There is no more hope for the country. We have killed democracy in Nigeria.

He said, “but for the rigging, there was no way that Nigerians would have reasonably voted for the APC after going through hell at the hands of the ruling party these eight years.

“The clues were there before the election, even blindfolded that Nigerians wanted real change.

"If the PDP or even the Labor Party had won, I'm not sure we would have this coldness that has enveloped the country. By now, there would have been celebrations all over the country.

“Nigeria did not do better under the APC. What we saw was more regression, frustration, killings, hunger and all that was negative.”< /p>

He noted that no pre-election opinion poll results favored the APC, insisting that the presidential election result had been doctored to favor the ruling party.

"Even the blind opinion poll did not allow APC to take over. Nigeria will have no place in the international community if this is allowed. There will be no more respect for us," he said.

Wabara expressed doubts about the courage of the judiciary to correct the anomaly, adding, "Our democracy is dead because I have no hope in the judiciary. It's the same unless we let's have a bold judge who is ready to lose his job the next day, but we don't have many."

He revealed that he would call an emergency meeting of BoT members immediately after the March 11 gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections to consider the elections, explaining that the reason for the postponement of meeting until after the next election was to allow members and other stakeholders to focus well on the upcoming elections.

He called for calm among PDP members as well as young Nigerians, called for a thorough investigation of the INEC to restore public confidence in the electoral process.
