Why religion should take precedence over who rules Nigeria

Hunger and untold hardship are not respectful of ethnicity or religion. Just like the rain, whenever there is a downpour, no one's roof is always spared, which is why religion should not be a criterion in determining who rules the country.

As the country gradually counts down the months to a new election year in 2023, the issue of religion has once again taken center stage, with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and other Nigerians notables being at the epicenter of all religious controversy.

Weaponizing ethnic and religious chauvinism will be detrimental and debilitating to every Nigerian, as these two sickening barometers for the election of Nigerian leaders have set the country back.

Nigeria has become a graveyard where thousands of people are killed daily, while hundreds more have abandoned their homes and become internally displaced.

Why should religion be the benchmark for determining who rules Nigeria? Why should the religions of presidential and vice-presidential candidates matter? And what does religion in this case have to do with a person's ability and ability to effectively govern a country like Nigeria?

Religious organizations or related groups must not allow political job seekers to use religion as a tool to gain power and simply obtain personal gain from those in authority. We must understand that the constitution of Nigeria grants everyone freedom of religion which must be strictly enforced and protected.
