Insecurity: ASIS International Conference on Sub-Saharan Africa to be Held in Abuja

Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Nigeria, will host security professionals from around the world for the first ASIS International Conference on Sub-Saharan Africa, which aims to propose and explore new ideas for improving security in Africa.

The 2023 conference, themed "Security Risk Management in Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous and Digital Africa (VUCAD)", is scheduled for July 26-28.

Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu, National Security Advisor (NSA), Chiefs of Security Services, FCTA Permanent Secretary, Olusade Adesola, ASIS Chairman and other keynote speakers from Ghana, South Africa, Europe and around the world are expected.

Making the revelation during a media conversation with selected journalists, Edward Orim, President of ASIS Abuja Chapter and Chairman of the local organizing committee of the conference, said that the event, which was previously just a West African gathering, will have over 200 physical participants and around 150 online participants.

According to him, the conference will help identify vulnerabilities and encourage and support government, especially those responsible for addressing insecurity, with new ideas to improve security in Africa.

Orim explained that the Association, formerly known as the American Society for Industrial Security, is a globally recognized industrial security organization with approximately 34,000 members.

He said, "We normally organize conferences between Africa, Europe, Asia and America, but for now, we are organizing the African conference, which Abuja is hosting. While July 26 will be the law enforcement and military appreciation cocktail dinner, July 27 will be the opening ceremony, and for the last day, there are various activities."

“For example, in Nigeria, the current administration takes the fight against bandits and criminal elements very seriously. Recently, the new army chief of staff said that there will be no more negotiations with these guys and that they should surrender their weapons.”

"So I think that's what this conference will help highlight and encourage. That's why we're having a dinner with the military and law enforcement to tell them that they're doing the right thing, and that they should keep going."

"We are collaborating with the FCTA, as they are our host, and this is not the first time it has been held in Africa. By September, we will hold the international conference in Dallas, USA, and the members will take training courses abroad to gain more knowledge and broader opportunities to combat the security threat we have."

"I would like to encourage members of the public and law enforcement to find the time and register in person for the conference, as their attendance will bring them many benefits."

"One of the main benefits that we need is to have network members. Most of the time, those who work in government, by the time they get retired, go out and can't integrate into society, and they will start to go into farming and so on. But this organization is certified, which helps members to have a life plan after active service."
