Insecurity: Zamfara residents blame FG for high cost of living

Residents of Zamfara state blamed the federal government for the steep rise in the cost of living.

A state businessman, Alhaji Aminu Abubakar, said the government should be held accountable for the insecurity and socio-economic challenges ravaging the whole country.

In an exclusive interview with DAILY POST in Gusau, the state capital, he pointed out that citizens are dying daily due to security concerns, hunger and starvation.

Abubakar stressed that the safety of citizens' lives and property was no longer guaranteed.

“By all indications, the protection of the lives and property of citizens has exceeded the power of the federal government.

"If citizens cannot be adequately protected and they live in abject poverty, then we are in a serious mess," he lamented.

He further denounced that “the Zamfara state government, for example, has not paid its civil servants their constitutional salaries and allowances for November 2022, but hundreds of millions of naira are wasted in the name of politics."

In his own comments, a public commentator, Alhaji Ahmed Bakare said that the main cause of food inflation was insecurity.

According to him, farmers were not allowed to engage in their agricultural activities by the pest bandits, pointing out that those who were bold enough to visit their farms, raised their prices to recoup the cost.

A farmer in the state, who went by the name of Haruna Yahaya, explained that most villages in the state have to pay millions of naira imposed on them as levies by the bandits before they can be licensed to cultivate.

“And we have to include these levies that we pay to bandits in our prices. Without that, we will be operating at a huge loss,” he said.
