The president of the Institute sounds the alarm on the theft of data

Audit Committee Institute Chairman Chris Ekeigwe has called on audit technology professionals in Nigeria to immediately review their security protocols.

Ekeigwe, in a statement made available to The PUNCH on Friday, said this would prevent what he described as an imminent data theft.

According to the IT expert, IT security auditors needed to be reminded that the economics of IT crime is compelling, making criminals give it a try.

He said, "It is important that IT audit consultants invest in potential new security technologies and improve staff behavior and operating procedures to ensure that data from customers are not put at risk. Society depends on our expertise and we must fulfill our duty of public interest with professionalism."

Ekeigwe also called for increased cooperation between the police and the accounting and auditing profession to enable the police to understand the challenges faced by tech auditors.

"Cooperation would be beneficial if accountants and auditors organize joint information security audit awareness training for police and auditors. It will also produce the collective efficiency needed to protect our community.

"There are many things police can teach auditors about safety and vice versa. Therefore, we need to embark on a strategy of co-learning now."
