Is Trump coming back to Facebook? Meta delays reinstatement decision: report

It has been two years since former President Donald Trump was kicked off multiple social media platforms, including META Facebook and Meta Platform Inc.'s Instagram (as well as Twitter) at the aftermath of the Capitol Hill Uprising on January 6, 2021.

What happened: As Twitter, under new owner Elon Musk, welcomed Trump to the platform, Meta pushed back the deadline to make a decision regarding his reinstatement, reports the Financial Times. An announcement on the decision will likely be made later this month, as opposed to the previously communicated timeline of January 7, 2023, the post added.

The decision on Trump's reinstatement could be the biggest test of authority Nick Clegg, president of global affairs at Meta, has faced, according to the report, citing insiders. Responsibility for making the decision would now fall to Clegg, who previously served as Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, as Meta CEO and majority shareholder Mark Zuckerberg is now focused on product development and his vision for the Metaverse. /p>

Polarizing decision: The outcome of Meta's deliberations could be polarizing, the FT said, citing experts. If Meta decides to keep Trump off its platforms, it could face the wrath of Trump's Republican allies, who may accuse the company of censoring conservative views.

On the other hand, left-wing groups might point out that allowing the former president to return could be irresponsible and undermine democracy, the FT said. "It's an impossible compromise and both decisions have tricky consequences," said Katie Harbath, Facebook's former director of public policy in charge of elections, according to FB.

Meta closed Friday's session up 0.07% at $120.34, according to data from Benzinga Pro. The stock ended 2022 with a loss of around 65%.
