Dame Carolyn McCall said the couple had done nothing wrong and were "of course" safe in their jobs presenting This Morning.

The reaction in the press and on social media showed "how misinformation spreads, and it's really awful for them," said Dame Carolyn.

" I don't think they feel good. I mean, it's hard," she added.

"Imagine yourself in the eye of a storm like this , where you're trying to say you've done nothing wrong, and all the noise around you says you've got. It's hard to deal with."

Willoughby and Schofield were slammed after they were seen on a live stream which showed the viewing of the Queen's coffin. Members of the public queued for many hours to enter Westminster Hall.

"They had accreditation," Dame Carolyn said. people say no. They were sent by This Morning to do a play for September 20, which ran. They had to interview people inside and out. They didn't move anyone in the queue. And in fact, they were very poorly represented."
